Cherimoya aka Chirimoya aka Chirimolla aka Graviola aka Tukib aka Anone aka Ice Cream Fruit  is a delicious tropical fruit, which is native to the Andean highlands in the South America, in the valleys of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Columbia. It is scientifically known as the Annona cherimola.

This fruit belongs to family group of Custard Apple. This exotic fruit is mostly grown in California.

Amazing thing of this fruit’s Plant is it is Hermaphrodite , flowers of this plant are female in the initial stage, but they later on convert into males. That’s why they require a self pollinator who cans collect the pollen from the flower in the male stage, and deposit it back in its female stage.

This fruit is rich in vitamin c, much more than many of the citrus fruits and is also high in calorie content. This fruit is also used in curing many diseases such as Anemia, Arthritis, Decalcification, Hypertension, Stomach contractions, stomach cramps, intestinal transit problems, constipation, diabetes and other related problems. Crushed seeds of this fruit is used as insecticide.

Now the main point for which i had written this article, Cherimoya’s seeds and skin are non-edible, so anyone should not eat it, as it can lead to severe consequences, a person can be paralyzed for 4 to 5 hours if you consume the Cherimoya skin. The kernels are also toxic, and its bark can also cause paralysis if it is injected.

Do you remember Dwayne Johnson’s 2003 Movie “The Rundown” , in a shot where Rosario Dawson gives a fruit named “Konlabos”, the fruit used to paralyze Dwayne Johnson and Seann William Scott’s characters, is actually this same fruit called Cherimoya.

So next time you eat Cherimoya, always remember not to eat its skin or seed by mistake, unless you want to experience how one feels while paralyzed 🙂
