British pensioners arrested for drug trafficking cocaine on Caribbean cruise ship
A British couple have been detained after a “large amount of cocaine” was found on a cruise ship returning from the Caribbean.
The suspects, aged 72 and 70, were detained on suspicion of trafficking narcotics moments after the ship docked at the terminal in Lisbon, Portugal.
Portuguese police said they arrested the pair after receiving information from the UK National Crime Agency (NCA).
The force said a search discovered a high amount of cocaine had been “ingeniously concealed” within four suitcases in their cabin.
The police statement read: “The arrests took place moments after the vessel had landed at the Cruise Terminal of Lisbon and following a search in the cabin that was occupied by the suspects, where were located four suitcases in whose structures was ingeniously concealed a high amount of product, more specifically cocaine, that has been seized.”
The pensioners have been remanded in custody and the investigation is carried out by the Judicial Police and the UK authorities.
